Deaths in Iraq

An interesting letter in the Australian Shooter Magazine this week,
which I quote: "If you consider that there has been an average of
160,000 troops in the Iraq Theater of operations during the past 22
months, and a total of 2112 deaths, that gives a firearm death rate
of 60 per 100,000 soldiers.

The firearm death rate in Washington , DC is 80.6 per 100,000 for
the same period. That means you are about 25 per cent more likely
to be shot and killed in the US capital, which has some of the strictest
gun control laws in the US , than you are in Iraq .

Conclusion: The US should pull out of Washington.

The Spoon

A lesson on how consultants can make a difference in an organization.

Last week, we took some friends to a new restaurant, 'Dave's Place,' and noticed that the waiter who took our order carried a spoon in his shirt pocket.

It seemed a little strange. When the busboy brought our water and utensils, I observed that he also had a spoon in his shirt pocket.

Then I looked around and saw that all the staff had spoons in their pockets. When the waiter came back to serve our soup I inquired, 'Why the spoon?'

'Well, 'he explained, 'the restaurant's owner hired Andersen Consulting to revamp all of our processes. After several months of analysis, they concluded that the spoon was the most frequently dropped utensil. It represents a drop frequency of approximately 3 spoons per table per hour.

If our personnel are better prepared, we can reduce the number of trips back to the kitchen and save 15 man-hours per shift.'

As luck would have it, I dropped my spoon and he replaced it with his spare. 'I'll get another spoon next time I go to the kitchen instead of making an extra trip to get it right now.' I was impressed.

I also noticed that there was a string hanging out of the waiter's fly. Looking around, I saw that all of the waiters had the same string hanging from their flies. So, before he walked off, I asked the waiter, 'Excuse me, but can you tell me why you have that string right there?'

'Oh, certainly!' Then he lowered his voice. 'Not everyone is so observant. That consulting firm I mentioned also learned that we can save time in the restroom.

By tying this string to the tip of our you-know-what, we can pull it out without touching it and eliminate the need to wash our hands, shortening the time spent in the restroom by 76.39%.

I asked quietly, 'After you get it out, how do you put it back?'

'Well,' he whispered, 'I don't know about the others, but I use the spoon.'

School in 1957 vs. School in 2007

Scenario: Jack goes quail hunting before school, pulls into school parking lot with shotgun in gun rack.
1957 - Vice principal comes over, looks at Jack's shotgun, goes to his car and gets his own shotgun to show Jack.
2007 - School goes into lock down, the SWAT Team is called, Jack is hauled off to jail and never sees his truck or gun again. Counselors are called in to assist traumatized students and teachers.

Scenario: Johnny and Mark get into a fistfight after school.
1957 - Crowd gathers. Mark wins. Johnny and Mark shake hands and end up buddies.
2007 - Police are called, SWAT team arrives and arrests Johnny and Mark. They are charged with assault and both a re expelled even though Johnny started it.

Scenario: Jeffrey won't sit still in class, disrupts other students.
1957 - Jeffrey is sent to the principal's office and given a good paddling. Returns to class, sits still and does not disrupt class again.
2007 - Jeffrey is given huge doses of Ritalin. Becomes a zombie. Tested for ADD. School gets extra provincial funding because Jeffrey has a disability.

Scenario: Billy breaks a window in his neighbor's car and his Dad gives him a whipping with his belt.

Scenario: Johnny falls during recess and scrapes his knee. His teacher, Mary, finds him crying, and gives him a hug to comfort him.
1957 - Johnny soon feels better and goes back to playing.
2007 - Mary is accused of being a sexual predator and loses her job. She faces three years in federal prison. Johnny undergoes five years of therapy.

Replacing the Energy Solutions Arena

My friend forwarded me a music video on Youtube called "The Postal Service - Such Great Heights" because he really liked the song.

I was watching, and enjoying the music when all of a sudden, I noticed that they zoomed right into Utah from a satellite image. I picked it up because I briefly recognized the Great Salt Lake at 3 minutes and 20 seconds.

I thought it was clever how they took a city block and turned it into a computer chip. That is when curiosity struck and I wanted to figure out which block they chopped out. Looking at the roads, railroad tracks and other land marks, I was able to pinpoint the exact block that they replaced with a computer chip. It is where the Energy Solutions Arena resides!

Why you ask?

Looking at the "jm" part of @slc_jm, everyone kept thinking my name was Jim. My name is Jeff McGrath, not Jim. Although, I must say, this didn't really bug me as much.
I couldn't change it to @JeffM or @Jeff, both were too common and already taken.
@Youtah is more original while still letting people know that I live in Utah (You-Tah).
Typing @SLC_JM on a cellphone is much more difficult on the cheaper cell phones just because of the _.
Last big reason, @Youtah matches my website, Youtah.com

You know, watching the Monster Trucks at the (formerly called Delta Center) Energy Solutions Arena really sucks. Reason being? By the time the trucks rev up their engine to a quarter of their potential power, they have to hit their brakes because the arena is so small! However, I must say that watching the kids faces is worth it. They just love seeing the trucks!

Red lights during a long exposure

Question:

When I take pictures at night (usually an exposure of >1 second) the red gets washed out and in extreme cases changes color and looks horrible. I've noticed that it doesn't matter what white balance I have or if I under/over expose the picture.

Has anyone else noticed this?
Is this a Nikon D80 issue only?
Is there a technical term for this?
Is there something I am doing wrong?
Is this correctable (besides Photoshop)?

Cactus and Tropicals Photowalk

I am part of a Flickr group called "Photowalking Utah" and our latest outting was to a store called "Cactus and Tropicals" in Draper Utah. It was a really awesome place.

There was a good turn out and quite a few people still there by the time I arrived. It was fun to see everyone and even more fun to see what other people come up with. It amazes at how different everyone's photos are every time, even if there are 80+ people shooting the same thing.

I also have to give props to the Store too. They were very nice to let us roam around and take pictures of everything in their place.

I was playing with my 30mm Sigma f/1.4 lens when I took this picture of the hanging baskets. Even though I was pretty far away, it still blows me away at the depth of field and how blurry everything is in the background. Awesome!

Gynochanic

A gynecologist had become fed up with malpractice insurance and HMO paperwork, and was burned out. Hoping to try another career where skillful hands would beneficial; he decided to become a mechanic. He went to the local technical college, signed up for evening classes, attended diligently, and learned all he could.

When the time of the practical exam approached, the gynecologist prepared carefully for weeks, and completed the exam with tremendous skill. When the results came back, he was surprised to find that he had obtained a score of 150%. Fearing an error, he called the instructor, Saying, "I don't want to appear ungrateful for such an outstanding result, but I wonder if there is an error in the grade." The instructor said, "During the exam, you took the engine apart perfectly, which was worth 50% of the total mark. You put the engine back together again perfectly, which is also worth 50% of the mark."

After a pause, the instructor added, "I gave you an extra 50% because you did it all through the muffler, which I've never seen done in my entire career!

The fog that cleared the valley.

This picture is of fog after a light rainstorm that helped clear the Salt Lake valley from really thick unhealthy smog. The smog got so bad, that that when I went to the Doctors with a cough, he said it was Bronchitis caused by the Smog itself. It was really horrible and everyone with sinus or lung problems were getting sick.

When I took this picture, I was in a building that overlooks the valley from the East Bench and was zoomed in at 200mm using my Nikkor 18-200VR lens. This allowed me to capture the edge of the fog line in the trees.

While this picture lacks color, I still consider it one of my favorite shots. The only way I can describe this picture is calm and serene.

LDS Draper Temple

I went to go check out the new LDS Church's Draper Utah Temple. There were several street closures so I parked and walked. I am not sure if I was supposed to be near it, but hey, I was on public sidewalks the whole time.

The place looked really busy and was bustling with movement. You can tell that they were getting ready for the open house. There were semi trucks parked and being unloaded, tents setup and people all over.

Anyway, I stood back so I wouldn't interrupt anything or anyone and took shots with my 18-200VR Nikkor lens.

It was a little difficult because the temple is very very bright and everything else is very dark, so it's hard to find a medium blend that works well. I decided to expose for the highlights and bring surprises out of the dark in Adobe Lightroom instead. After all, it was the temple I went to take pictures of.

You may also be asking, why so many shots at such slanted angles? Good Question. There were many cars coming in and out, semi trucks, large white temporary tents, people, houses and street lamps in the way at the bottom, I was trying to figure out ways to capture as much of the temple as possible while cutting the ugly stuff out. When I fill the picture with the temple, there is more light let in, which gives me a faster shutter speed, which means a lower ISO, which means less blur, resulting in a higher quality image and more detail. In most of the images, you may notice that I darkened the bottom, so your eyes naturally focus on the subject and not the small stuff at the bottom.

Noise Canceling Head Phones

I am looking at buying noise canceling headphones for work.

I am wanting them to be of good quality. (not top of the line, can't afford those).
I am hoping around the $80 to $150 range.
I also wear glasses and some headphones hurt when they push on the glasses temple area.
I'd be wearing these for +10 hours a day 5/days a week.

I currently have the Sony MDR-V150 headphones and I have been very pleased with their shape, size and comfort. Same physical characteristics would be awesome.

I was thinking of getting the Philips SHN9500 noise canceling headphones but I am not sure about the shape.

Priority:
#1 Comfort (Glasses and very long extended wear)
#2 Noise Cancellation
#3 Quality of Sound

Any suggestions?

Sigma 30mm f/1.4 Review

It is slower than I thought. I've missed shots that my 18-200VR would have auto focused and captured because of its lack of speed. The auto focus is a lot noisier than I expected too. Makes a lot of clicking noises during auto focus.

Has difficulty focusing at f/1.4 on auto focus while set to a single focal point with manual aperture and priority. [Using the Nikon D80] Takes great portraits and zero chromatic aberration. The 30mm is very nice to have instead of the 50mm for indoor shooting. Wide lens and looks awesome. It has a heavy, solid feel when you hold it. The lens uses a 62mm filter, which is easy to find. Insanely awesome Depth of Field and beautiful star effect at high aperture on lights.

For what I paid, I expected a little bit more from it, but I am still enjoying it and don't regret the purchase. I also like the lens more than the Fifty Nifty (50mm f/1.8 Nikkor) I sold to pay for this lens.

How Photowalking Utah Saved the Day

I am thankful for all the photographers in the Photowalking Utah Flickr group. They have been very generous, helpful and kind.

It's the day of my brothers wedding.

We are standing in the temples front doors when the security guard approaches us and hands us a little yellow slip of paper and walks away. The paper said "Your photographer was in a serious car accident and was being sent to the hospital in an ambulance due to a concussion. He will not make it to the temple". Well crap!

This is when I sent a text message to Twitter stating the situation. I got a couple of replies, the first of which was Dave Terry. He said he could come fill in at the reception if needed. What a relief and what a guy! (Not only that but his pictures rock)

I know NOTHING about wedding photography.

My brother-in-law (Phill Monson) and I (Jeff McGrath aka SLC_JM) had our cameras. Phill grabbed his Canon Rebel XTI & I grabbed my Nikon D80 and went to work.

Luckily I had borrowed a SB600 speed light from photogirl66 that I could also use as a fill light. Luck would also have it that dilvie (Eric Hamiliton) had also taught me how to use the SB600 in previous events I had shot with him.

Towards the end, we got another yellow slip of paper from security saying that the photographer had been released and that we needed to call him. So my brother-in-law gave him a ring on the tele and was told that he was still planning or hoping to make it to the reception.

I called Dave Terry back and informed him of the situation and he came up with a game plan, to still show up, setup and be there just incase and that if or when the other photographer showed up, he'd pack up and leave.

We were going to do family portraits at 5:00 and everything and everyone was running late. Dave was there not only on time, but early (he beat me there). He whips out all his nice equiptment and sets everything up.

It's now almost 6pm and we are finally starting to get pictures taken, guests are to arrive at 6:30 and still no word at all from the photographer. I'm thinking to myself "Thank heavens Dave is here" when the other photographer walked in late.

Poor guy was loaded on pain meds and super loopy. We asked him if he was okay, and that if he needed to go home, we had a back up photographer, but he insisted he was fine and could do the shoot (what a trooper). So Dave packed up and headed off.

Once again, I can't say it enough, thanks again for your willingness and help Dave!

I did feel bad, because Dave had his Canon 5D MarkII and another body with really nice lenses, all this gear, off camera flashes with umbrellas and the other photographer walked in with the D70 and a Speedlight SB600... nothing more. I am curious as to how he felt walking into that situation. [5D Mark II vs. D70]

He shot the job, in pain, a little on the loopy side, but hung in there like a champ.
